The holistic use of oriental medicine is arousing increased interest among consumers. There are many recipes within Chinese medicine used for the treatment of skin problems. Dr Daniel Schmid, head of research at Mibelle Biochemistry, describes a formulation using three Chinese medicinal herbs which, following traditional Chinese healing principals, has been specially developed for the protection of sensitive central European skin. With the help of a gene chip the action of this formulation was tested in vitro on 1,300 skin cell genes. The chip makes it possible to analyse hundreds of genes at the same time in one experiment.

Der ganzheitliche Ansatz fernöstlicher Medizin stösst beim Verbraucher auf wachsendes Interesse. In der Chinesischen Medizin gibt es viele Rezepte zur Behandlung von Hautproblemen. Dr. Daniel Schmid, Forschungsleiter von Mibelle Biochemistry, beschreibt eine Rezeptur aus drei Chinesischen Heilkräutern, die gemäss der Chinesischen Heilkunde speziell für den Schutz empfindlicher mitteleuropäischer Haut entwickelt wurde. Mittels Genchip wurde die Wirkung dieser Rezeptur auf 1.300 Gene von Hautzellen in vitro untersucht. Der Chip ermöglicht es, in einem einzigen Experiment gleichzeitig Hunderte von Genen zu analysieren.

A combination of Chinese herbs is shown here, by gene array analysis, to stimulate the skin’s resistance against free radicals, oxidative stress and toxic molecules, while also reducing extracellular matrix degradation. The extract also is shown to help against skin irritation in vivo.
