Stimuli for Skin Stem Cells for Real Skin Rejuvenation

D. Schmid,

HPC Today 04/2009

The fruit of an old apple cultivar were used to establish a plan cell culture line. An extract of these cultured plant cells was tested on keratinocyte progenitor cells. The extract was found to greatly increase the colony-forming efficiency, indicating an enhancement of the stem cell characteristic. The same extract, incorporated at 2 percent into a vehicle cream, was tested in a clinical trial over 4 weeks on 20 subjects. The test cream significantly reduced wrinkle depth in the crow's feeet area. The positive effect on skin smoothness could also been shown on digital photos before and after treatment.

Stem cells of and old apple cultivar with very good storage properties were produced by applying plant cell culture technique. The extract of the cultured apple stem cells was shown to enhance the viability of umbilical cord blood stem cells, to reverse senescence signs in human fibroblast cells and to increase lifespan of isolated human hair follicles. PhytoCellTec™ Malus Domestica, a cosmetic ingredient based on encapsulated extract of cultured apple stem cells, was tested in a clinical trial over 4 weeks with 20 subjects. This new ingredient was found to significantly reduce wrinkles in the crow's feet area.

Stimulation of Stem Cells for Real Rejuvenation

CosmeticsDesign 08/2008

In contrast to embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells persist for the whole life. They are indispensable to the maintenance and repair of tissues. Some few stem cells in the basal layer of the epidermis produce all the other keratinocytes that differentiate to the stratum corneum and are renewed every four weeks. In older skin, the epidermal stem cells are less active and lower in number leading to wrinkles and an increased renewal time of the epidermis. Plants too have stem cells. After isolation, they can be cultured in liquid media. PhytoCellTec Malus Domestica, a preparation of apple stem cells, was found to stimulate the proliferation of human blood stem cells and to increases the lifespan of skin fibroblast cells and of isolated hair follicles. In a clinical trial over 4 weeks with 20 subjects, this new ingredient was found to reduce significantly wrinkles in the crow's feet area.
